Pedestrian Accident Statistics
Over the last 33 years, pedestrians have comprised the majority of accident fatalities throughout the country. But why is that the case? Pedestrians are more vulnerable to road hazards compared to passengers of enclosed vehicles.
The federal agency in charge of ensuring the safety of those on America’s roadways, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), found that 5900 pedestrians were killed in the United States in 2016.
Between 2010 and 2016, the number of pedestrian fatalities in Texas went up significantly, from just 273 in 2010 to 1,238 in 2016. The number of pedestrian deaths has nearly doubled over the last two decades.
In 2019, there were 5,975 traffic crashes involving pedestrians in Texas, resulting in 669 deaths, a 5% increase over the previous year. Another 1,317 persons were critically injured as a result of the explosion.
