Fatal Tractor-Trailer Accident Statistics
Tractor-trailer collisions are more deadly than other types of road accidents. It’s primarily due to the large size difference between big rig trucks and other vehicles on the road. Every 15 minutes, a person is killed or seriously injured in a tractor-trailer accident, also known as 18-wheelers, big rigs, or semi-trucks. Approximately 500,000 trucking accidents occur in the United States each year, with approximately 5,000 resulting in death.
According to the Texas Department of Transportation, approximately 34,000 accidents involving at least one commercial truck occurred in 2016. In these accidents, 6,100 people were injured, including 1,100 people who were paralyzed and nearly 600 people who died. Tractor-trailer accidents are caused by various factors, such as loss of control of the truck, a tire blowout, a disabling or non-disabling vehicle failure, excessive speed, lane drifting, and improper truck maneuvering, and driver fatigue.
