Wrong-Way Accident Statistics
With approximately 280 million vehicles on the road and more than 227.5 million drivers possessing a valid driver’s license, the United States is one of the busiest countries in terms of road traffic. One of the factors contributing to an increase in traffic accidents is the volume of traffic. Every year, 6 million car accidents occur in the United States. Approximately 37,000 individuals are killed in motor vehicle accidents. In this case, a wrong-way collision took place.
Wrong-way accidents happen when a driver inadvertently turns their vehicle in the opposite direction, colliding with cars going in the appropriate direction. Driver error is the most common cause of wrong-way crashes, but vehicle malfunction or bad route design can also play a role. According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety’s most recent data study, there were 2,008 deaths from wrong-way driving crashes on divided highways between 2015 and 2018, an average of 500 deaths per year. This is a 34% increase over the 375 deaths per year from 2010 to 2014.
