Fatal Pedestrian Accident Statistics
For the last 33 years, pedestrians have made up a large percentage of traffic deaths. So why is this the case? This is because pedestrians are more susceptible to dangers on the road than people riding in private cars. The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that 5,900 pedestrians were killed on American roads.
Many Texas streets are built to be used solely by vehicles, leaving pedestrians unprotected. These hazards are also present on rural roads and in smaller towns, where pedestrians may also be affected. B ad city planning is also a factor. Pedestrians may be at risk on highways, where there is heavy but fast-moving traffic if streets are not properly built.
In 2010, there were only around 273 reported pedestrian fatalities in Texas. Since then, pedestrian deaths in Texas have doubled in the last decade. In 2018, approximately 7908 pedestrian accidents occurred, which resulted in 643 deaths.
