Fatal Pedestrian Accident Statistics
Over the past 33 years, pedestrians have made up a significant portion of traffic fatalities. What is the reason for this? Pedestrians face a greater risk of harm than passengers in private vehicles because they are less protected from road hazards. According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the government agency in charge of traffic safety in the United States, more than 5,900 pedestrians were killed in 2016.
Texas was responsible for 10% of all pedestrian fatalities in the United States in 2017. There were 5,975 pedestrian traffic collisions in Texas in 2019, resulting in 669 deaths, up 5% from the previous year. According to law enforcement crash reports, people who fail to follow traffic safety laws and are hit while crossing the street, vehicles that fail to yield the right of way, driving distractedly, or speeding are the top causes of pedestrian accidents. Another common factor is alcohol.
