[10-01-2021] Houston County, TX – Child killed After A Speeding Vehicle Near Chartres

An 8-year-old child died after a speeding car crash at St. Joseph Street Friday night, October 1.

The devastating accident happened around 10:30 p.m. downtown Houston in the 2001 block of St. Joseph St. near Chartres. A Dodge Challenger driver was allegedly speeding on a red light when he collided with another vehicle, causing it to crash into a pole.

Two parents and their 8-year-old child were inside, according to authorities. The parents were unharmed, according to officers on the scene, but the child sustained the most severe injuries and was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

Investigators confirmed the child died as a result of his injuries on Sunday. Meanwhile, the other driver received no injuries in the collision and was said to be fully cooperative with officers throughout the investigation.

He also didn’t appear to be inebriated, so no charges have been filed yet, but the investigation is still ongoing. The accident is still a work in progress.

Speeding Vehicle Accidents Statistics

In Texas, 3,893 people were killed in automobile crashes during 2020, up from 3,623 deaths in 2019. That increase occurred even though traffic volumes were about 50% below normal for several months of the year, according to the Texas Department of Transportation.

Precise numbers on how many of those 2020 deaths were actually caused by speeding weren’t yet available. Just before the pandemic, in 2019 speeding was a primary cause in 20% of fatal crashes in Texas, according to transportation department records.
