Fatal Semi-Truck Accident Statistics
Commercial vehicles such as semi-trucks and tractor-trailers are often the largest vehicles on the road. Because of this, collisions involving tractor-trailers frequently result in catastrophic damage, putting the lives of those in other vehicles at risk. Texas leads the nation in the number of fatal truck accidents. There were 658 fatal semi-truck accidents in Texas in 2018, leaving 664 people dead.
The 664 trucking fatalities in Texas in 2018 accounted for more than 13% of all trucking fatalities in the country and are more than 52% higher than the number of trucking fatalities reported by California, the state with the next highest fatality rate.
Semi-truck accidents are more deadly compared to other types of road accidents. It’s mainly because of the considerable size difference of big rig trucks compared to other vehicles on the road. Tractor-trailer crashes are often caused by loss of control of the truck, a tire blowout, a disabling or non-disabling vehicle failure, excessive speed, lane drifting, improper truck maneuvering, and driver fatigue.
