Head-On Crash Statistics
Every year, approximately 5 million traffic accidents occur in the United States. Annually, at least 38,000 people are killed in these accidents. In this case, a head-on collision took place. Although head-on collisions account for only 2% of all accidents, they account for 10% of all fatalities on U.S. highways.
The collision force in a head-on collision is increased by the speed and weight of both vehicles involved. Head-on collisions produce a significant amount of energy. As a result of the increased energy, injuries in this type of crash are more likely to be fatal.
Head-on collisions are common at traffic lights, stop signs, and blind intersections, as well as on freeways. Intersection head-on collisions occur when drivers disregard traffic laws and signals such as red lights, stop signs, or yield signs.
