One unidentified person was killed in a fatal crash in Houston after a man ran a red light, causing a wreck on Monday, October 25.
The crash occurred around 5:20 p.m. in the 10900 block of Beamer Road. According to a news release, local police said that witnesses told them that the driver, identified as 40-year-old Kyle Nolen L., was driving a white Cadillac Deville at high speed northbound when he ran the red light and struck a gray Ford Escape traveling on Fuqua Drive with a green light.
The 45-year-old victim was transported to a nearby hospital where he was eventually pronounced dead, while a 55-year-old female passenger in the same Ford sustained severe injuries and was also brought to an area hospital. Lozano was charged with intoxication manslaughter and intoxication assault in the 351st State District Court.
According to Houston police, Lozano was confirmed to be driving under the influence and was taken to an area hospital for treatment of minor injuries. He was then charged and arrested.
Fatal DUI Accident Statistics
According to the legislation, all drivers must exercise “reasonable care in the circumstances.” If someone does not exercise reasonable caution in their actions, they are considered negligent. Negligent drivers may be intoxicated or under the influence of drugs, putting your life in danger. Each death or injury caused by an intoxicated motorist could have been avoided.
Unfortunately, drunk driving incidents continue to occur frequently across the country. In 2016, drunk driving crashes killed 10,497 people, accounting for 28% of all traffic-related deaths in the United States. According to the Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT), 1,024 people were killed in drunk driving accidents in 2017.
This figure represents 28% of all motor vehicle collision fatalities in the state. In the same year, approximately 14,000 people were injured in DUI crashes, with injuries ranging from mild to severe. This equates to slightly more than 37 injured victims per day.
Harris County Lawyer for Victims of Fatal DUI Accidents
While your insurance company may be eager to assist you following an automobile accident, you should be aware that while they will provide some financial assistance, they may not always pay you what you deserve. Oftentimes, an intoxicated driver lacks insurance, leaving you, the victim, with no way to recover for your losses. Even if the at-fault motorist carries insurance, you may be unable to recover enough money to cover your medical bills and other expenses.
While the victim’s family awaits the outcome of the official investigation, they are encouraged to pursue a wrongful death claim with the assistance of their attorney. Through a wrongful death claim, the victim’s family can seek financial compensation for the damages caused by the fatal accident, including funeral costs, loss of income and companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional trauma.
