17-year-old Texas high school cheerleader Makayla N. was finally able to come back home after spending two months in rehab after getting paralyzed in a freak accident while practicing for homecoming.
The tragic accident happened on September 20, 2021. Makayla was practicing tumbling for her upcoming homecoming event at school. She was performing without the use of apparatus at the time of the accident.
Unfortunately, as Makayla was practicing her stunt, something went horribly wrong. Makayla then severely injured herself, and she was immediately rushed to a hospital.
Makayla spent months in rehab. She suffered from a severe spinal cord injury as a result of the accident. She was paralyzed from the chest down.
Makayla may be unable to walk again due to the severity of her injuries, but her family remains hopeful that she may be able to recover and move someday slowly.
Makayla’s relatives set up a Go Fund Me for the young teen to help with her medical expenses. Over 2,300 people donated, and the donations reached up to $196,000.
The young girl is trying to regain movement in her arms again and has recently learned how to hold a paintbrush. The young girl also mentions how she’s slowly able to recover feeling in her legs again.
Paralysis Cases Statistics
Paralysis is the loss of sensation and movement in a particular part of the body, typically caused by injuries or an illness. It occurs when the nerves of the spinal cord are prevented from operating normally.
Sometimes paralysis is a result of a medical condition, such as a stroke. Often it is the result of an injury to your spinal cord. The location and severity of the damage will determine the extent of your paralysis.
The Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation conducted a study in 2013 that found that the prevalence of paralysis was far greater than previously thought.
Paralysis, defined by the study as a central nervous system disorder resulting in difficulty or inability to move the upper or lower extremities, affects an estimated 5,357,970 people in the United States.
33.7 percent of paralysis cases were caused by stroke, followed by spinal cord injury (27.3 percent) and multiple sclerosis (18.6 percent).
