Fatal Pedestrian Accident Statistics
There is no protective equipment for pedestrians, such as airbags, seatbelts, or bumpers, so they are among the most at risk on the road. Each and every one of us has an obligation to obey the traffic laws so that we can reduce the number of pedestrian deaths to zero.
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) data from 2016 shows 5,900 pedestrian deaths in the US. Pedestrian deaths are continuing to rise in Texas and now account for nearly one in five of all traffic fatalities.
With 4,852 crashes involving pedestrians and 1,211 serious injuries and 731 deaths resulting, the number of pedestrian fatalities increased by nine percent last year. Motorist inattention, driver inattention; pedestrians who fail to yield the right-of-way; and drivers who do not yield that right-of-way also play a major role in Texas traffic accidents.
There were 10 percent more pedestrian deaths in Texas in 2017 than in 2016. Pedestrians were involved in 5,975 traffic accidents in Texas last year, which resulted in 669 deaths.
Most pedestrian accidents are caused by pedestrians who flout traffic laws while crossing the street, vehicles that fail to yield the right of way, and distracted drivers. Alcoholism and depression are strongly linked.
