According to the Harris County Precinct 5 Constable’s office, a wrong-way driver collided with a private ambulance on the Westpark Tollway, killing two people and injuring two others on Saturday, January 8, 2022.
The fatal two-vehicle crash occurred at about 4:45 a.m. in the eastbound lanes near Fondren Road.
Deputies from Pct. 5 believe the wrong-way driver, who was driving a black Chevrolet Equinox, was speeding and failed to notice multiple illuminating “wrong way” signs.
Two people were pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics from each vehicle, but it was unclear which vehicle they were in.
One of the people in the wrong-way vehicle is in serious condition. Prior to the crash, it was unknown if they were wearing seatbelts.
According to deputies from Pct. 5, there was no patient inside the ambulance at the time of the crash.
Investigators believe the Equinox driver entered the tollway through the Fondren exit ramp, based on the location of the crash and the time between calls.
Local authorities are still investigating the crash.
