One driver died when the load of a sand hauler crushed the other driver inside his cab in a fatal truck accident between two semi-trucks in the oil patch in Winkler County on Thursday, January 27, 2022.
The collision happened around 7:30 a.m. on Highway 302, about 5 miles outside the city limits.
According to the Winkler County Sheriff’s Office, deputies from the WCSO were dispatched to the crash scene for a report of a major crash.
A sand hauler and another Semi-truck had collided head-on in the middle of the highway when the crew arrived.
According to local news outlets, a tow truck was called to the scene around 9:00 a.m. to assist in removing the sandbox from the Semi-cab truck.
The cab was completely filled with sand, trapping the driver. According to reports, a deceased male was removed from the semi’s cab just 20 minutes later.
At this time, the deceased’s name has not been revealed. The highway was shut down until Thursday afternoon.
The crash remains under investigation.
