[01-07-2022] Travis County, TX – At Least Four People Injured in North Austin Apartment Complex Fire

A three-alarm apartment fire in North Austin sent at least four individuals to nearby hospitals on Friday early morning, January 7, 2022.

The accident happened around 4 a.m. at the Ventura Apartments at 9133 Northgate Boulevard in North Austin, between West Rundberg Lane and US Highway 183 sits the apartment complex.

The fire has forced more than 30 people to flee their homes, and the Austin Fire Department and Austin-Travis County EMS were dispatched to the fire.

Six ambulances and 100 firemen were dispatched to the scene, according to ATCEMS.

The building was reportedly engulfed in flames, with occupants trapped inside when first responders arrived. According to the Austin Fire Department, rescue efforts began right away.

At least four people have been sent to hospitals for treatment, according to ATCEMS.

Two victims, one with burns and the other with smoke inhalation, were brought to Dell Seton Medical Center with critical, life-threatening injuries. Two more people were transferred to St. David’s Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

Four others reportedly refused to be taken to the hospital. During the apartment fire, first responders were able to save dogs, cats, and one possum.

There are 42 apartments in the complex. According to the Austin Fire Department, all residents have been displaced due to the scope of the devastation.

Glen W., a resident of the Ventura apartments, was awoken by an Austin firefighter. He claimed that the firefighter was going door to door, pounding on them and that he saved nearly everyone’s life.

When the fire broke out, Jessica C. was sleeping with her infant. She thought a stranger was breaking into her house when she awoke. She claimed that a cop tried to break down the door to get her and her son out.

The Capital Metropolitan Transportation Authority is said to have dispatched buses to the apartment complex so that people could sit and stay warm. Austin was experiencing sub-zero temps during that morning.

The Red Cross is also on the scene, aiding residents of the apartment complex who have been displaced.

According to the Austin Fire Department, the fire appears to have originated on the second story of the building. Firefighters are still investigating the cause of the fire, but people should exercise caution while using space heaters.
Residents were encouraged to check whether their smoke detectors were operational.
