The Flats on Chapel Apartments in Waco were engulfed in flames overnight, displacing 15 people and destroying seven units on Tuesday, January 25, 2022.
The fire started in the attic of the two-story building shortly before midnight in the 9800 block of Chapel Road, but the cause is unknown at this time.
Due to the heavy volume of fire in an apartment building in the middle of the night, units called for a second alarm, which is basically reinforcements, said Robby Bergerson, the Executive Deputy Fire Chief with Waco Fire.
While no residents were hurt, Chief Bergerson said one firefighter was hit in the head and suffered an injury. He stated that the firefighter should be fine.
Navin N., who lived in one of the evacuated units, was said to have been asleep with his wife when he awoke to smoke in the unit.
According to Chief Bergerson, 34 firefighters responded to the apartment fire, which was extinguished in about 30 minutes. According to Bergerson, the fire was contained to the attic. In the morning, the investigation into what happened will begin.
The entire fire, according to Bergerson, occurred in the attic. It was reported there was no fire in the apartments themselves.
The Red Cross is assisting those who the fire has displaced, but the Flats on Chapel apartment manager said that anyone who wants to help could call them directly at (254) 420-1137 in the office.
