Workplace Injury Statistics
Texas private employers reported a total of 177,977 non-fatal workplace injuries and illnesses in 2018, the most recent year for which complete statistics are available. Nearly a third of all non-fatal accidents involved injuries that required time away from work. Nine days was the yearly average amount of time away from work.
However, non-fatal injuries are only one consideration. Nearly every day in 2018, a Texas worker was killed in the line of duty, resulting in a huge loss of life at work and for their families.
Various causes, such as falls, asphyxiation, electrocution, equipment failure, heatstroke, toxic exposure, and automobile accidents, have increased the death toll. More people lost their lives on the job in the same year than were killed in homicides in all four Texas metropolises combined (Houston, Dallas, Fort Worth, and Austin).
