Statistics of Fatal-Two-Vehicle Collision Involving Children
In 2019, 608 children under the age of 12 died, and more than 91,000 were injured in car accidents. Thirty-eight percent of children under the age of 12 who died in car accidents were not wearing seatbelts. On every trip, parents and caregivers can save a life by ensuring that their children are properly buckled.
Restraints are used differently depending on the age of the child. In 2019, 43 percent of children aged 8 to 12 were not buckled up, compared to 41 percent of children aged 4 to 7 and 27 percent of children aged under four.
Drunk driving puts the safety of child passengers in jeopardy. In the United States in 2019, alcohol-impaired driving was involved in 23 percent of child passenger deaths among children aged 14 and younger, with the child’s own driver being drunk 64 percent of the time.
Restraint systems for children are frequently abused. Approximately 46% of car seats and booster seats are used incorrectly, which could reduce their effectiveness.
