Fatal Auto-Pedestrian Accident Statistics

There is no protective equipment for pedestrians, such as airbags, seatbelts, or bumpers, so they are among the most vulnerable users of the road. Each and every one of us has an obligation to obey the traffic laws so that we can reduce the number of pedestrian deaths to zero.

One in every five Texas traffic deaths is now attributed to pedestrians, according to the state’s Department of Public Safety (DPS). One thousand two hundred eleven serious injuries and 731 deaths resulted from collisions involving pedestrians in 2020, an increase of nine percent over the previous year.

Pedestrians who fail to yield the right of way to vehicles; driver inattention and failure to yield the right of way; and speeding are among the most common causes of pedestrian traffic accidents in Texas.

In 2016, there were 5,900 pedestrian fatalities in the United States, according to the NHTSA.

Pedestrian accidents accounted for 10% of all fatalities in Texas in 2017. There were 5,975 pedestrian accidents on Texas roads last year, with 669 deaths.

Pedestrian deaths and injuries are caused by traffic violations, failure to yield the right of way, and distracted driving.
