Fatal Bicycle Crash Statistics
Many people in the United States ride bicycles for a variety of reasons, including transportation, health, and fun. A bicycle is considered a vehicle in most states, and cyclists are expected to abide by the same rules of the road as other vehicles.
Because they are not as visible as cars, bicyclists are more at risk of injury or even death because drivers often fail to notice them. For those who prefer to pedal rather than drive, some states and cities are more bicycle-friendly than others.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), seven hundred twenty-six people were killed in bicycle/motor vehicle collisions across the United States in 2012, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). In addition, there were an estimated 49,500 bicycle-related injuries.
Typically, only fatal bicycle accidents are reported in Texas and other states. With an increase in the number of people cycling in the streets of Texas cities, more cyclists will likely be injured in a car collision.
The more dangerous the road, the more likely it is that a crash will result in a fatality. There were more than a third of bicycle fatalities on U.S. and state highways despite the fact that bicycle riders spend more time riding on city streets than on other types of roadways. Interstate highways and farm-to-market roads both have a higher fatality rate for bicyclists than the other modes of transportation.
