Statistics of Two-Vehicle Crash Involving Children
In 2019, 608 children under the age of 12 lost their lives, and nearly 91,000 were injured in automobile accidents. Over a third of children under the age of 12 who died in automobile accidents were unbuckled.
Restraints are used differently when a child is younger. There were only 27% percent of children between the ages of 4 and 7 who were not wearing seatbelts in 2019. This is compared to 41% who were between the ages of 4 and 7 and 27% who were between the ages of 4 and 8.
When a driver is intoxicated, it puts children’s lives in danger. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, alcohol-impaired driving contributed to 23% of all child passenger deaths in 2019, with 64% of those deaths occurring when the child’s own driver was intoxicated.
The use of child restraints is frequently misunderstood. 46 percent of all child safety seats and booster seats are incorrectly used, according to a recent study
