One unidentified biker was hurt after crashing into a car in Sherwood Way on Wednesday, December 29, 2021.
According to initial scanner reports, the motorcycle accident occurred on Wednesday afternoon at the intersection of Sunset Drive and Sherwood Way.
After a motorcyclist collided with the back of a vehicle in the middle of the day, traffic was backed up in one of San Angelo’s busiest intersections. All eastbound lanes on Sherwood Way were closed as a result of the accident.
An ambulance was dispatched to the scene after reports of a person lying on the ground.
The black Honda motorcycle was traveling east on Sherwood Way, while the gray Toyota passenger car was traveling west, according to San Antonio Police Department Officer Welch.
Witnesses at the scene said the motorcyclist split lanes between two cars and struck the back of the Toyota as it attempted to make a left-hand turn onto Sunset Dr. on a yellow light.
The driver was taken to Shannon Medical Center for evaluation, but no serious injuries have yet been reported.
While official citations are pending, the motorcyclist may face citations, according to SAPD.
Motorcycle Accident Statistics
Accidents involving motorcycles are extremely common and often fatal. Passengers on motorcycles have a higher risk of death or serious injury than those in other types of vehicles. The NHTSA estimates that motorcyclists are 27 times more likely than passengers in enclosed cars to die in a collision (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration).
It is estimated that one motorcycle rider is killed every day in Texas. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the number of motorcycle-related injuries and deaths in Texas is particularly high.
In Texas, at least 1,800 people were injured, and 412 people died on motorcycles in 2019. Given these statistics, it’s safe to say that Texas’ highways pose a significant danger to motorcycle riders.
Cars and trucks making left turns at intersections are a common cause of motorcycle accidents. Motorcycle riders are helpless to avoid a collision when cars fail to yield and turn in front of them, as is often the case.
