A 44-year-old man identified as Robert Daniel T. was killed after a deadly two-vehicle crash involving a parked tractor-trailer in Salado on Wednesday afternoon, August 25.
According to the initial reports from local authorities, the fatal crash happened at approximately 4:00 p.m. on southbound Interstate 35 in Salado. A 2012 black Ford F-150 driven by Taylor was initially heading southbound on Interstate 35 when, for unclear reasons, it veered into the right shoulder.
The Ford F-150 then rear-ended a semi-truck that was parked on the southbound shoulder of the highway. The semi-truck was stopped at the right shoulder because it broke down before the collision. Sadly, the Ford F-150 driver sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Information about the accident is limited at the moment. It’s unclear whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash. An active investigation of the case is currently ongoing.
Fatal Two-Vehicle Crash Statistics
The state of Texas has a high rate of fatal traffic collisions. According to official state records, there were 1.29 traffic fatalities in Texas for every 100 million vehicle miles traveled in 2018. In 2019, there were 3,610 traffic fatalities in Texas. Every two hours and 26 minutes, someone died in a car accident. In Texas, there were no days in 2019 when no one was killed in a car accident.
In this case, a rear-end crash happened. A rear-end accident occurs when one vehicle collides with the car immediately in front of it. Because the leading driver cannot usually prevent the collision, a rear-end accident is often (but not always) the fault of the rear position driver. According to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), rear-end collisions cause approximately 950,000 injuries and 2,000 deaths each year.
