One unidentified person was killed after a deadly pedestrian accident in San Antonio’s west side on Tuesday night, October 19.
The accident happened in the 1900 block of Bandera Road in San Antonio at approximately 9:30 p.m. An eastbound white Toyota sedan struck an unidentified man on the roadway for unclear reasons. The unidentified pedestrian was immediately taken to University Hospital but was later pronounced dead.
Authorities suspect that the environment may have been a factor in the crash. The street lights along the road were not well lit at the time of the accident. The driver that struck the man remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities.
The driver claims that he could not see the man until he was in front of the vehicle. The driver reportedly attempted to swerve and brake but was unfortunately unable to avoid hitting the man. The identities of the involved parties have not been disclosed. Local authorities are further investigating the case.
Fatal Pedestrian Accident Statistics
Pedestrians have made up a considerable percentage of traffic deaths over the last 33 years. But why is that? It is because pedestrians are more vulnerable to traffic hazards than passengers in private vehicles. In the United States in 2017, 5,977 pedestrians were killed in automobile accidents. That equates to one death every 88 minutes.
10% of all pedestrian deaths in the US in 2017 occurred in Texas. A 5 percent increase in pedestrian traffic deaths was seen in Texas in 2019, following 5,975 collisions, with 669 fatalities. According to the Texas Department of Transportation, in 2020, there were 4,852 pedestrian crashes in Texas, resulting in 1,211 serious injuries and 731 deaths, a 9% increase in pedestrian fatalities over the previous year.
