Two people were hurt after a traffic collision involving a big rig in San Antonio’s Northwest side on early Monday morning, October 11.
The collision transpired at approximately 2:00 a.m. on Interstate 10 near UTSA Boulevard in Northwest San Antonio. A sports utility vehicle and an 18-wheeler collided on the roadway under unclear circumstances.
How the collision occurred, and the reason it happened has not been disclosed. Emergency personnel later arrived at the scene and found the SUV pinned against the highway barrier while the 18-wheeler went over the barrier, which caused diesel fuel from the vehicle to leak onto the roadway.
Two people inside the SUV were extricated from the wreckage by emergency personnel and were taken to an area hospital for treatment. The identities of the injured parties and their condition have not been disclosed.
The driver of the 18-wheeler and his passengers were uninjured in the mishap. It’s unclear whether drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash. The accident is currently under further investigation.
Big Rig Accident Statistics
Without the trucking industry, our economy would remain stagnant. Commercial trucks, such as 18-wheelers, are the most common mode of transportation for goods in the United States.
The trucking industry is struggling to keep up with rising customer demand. Every year in the United States, tens of thousands of semi-truck accidents result in traffic fatalities.
According to the Department of Transportation, nearly 4,000 Americans lost their lives in tractor-trailer accidents in 2015. The death toll from semi-truck accidents rose by 22% between 2009 and 2015. Tractor-trailers were responsible for 11% of all traffic deaths in 2015.
Texas is the state with the highest number of truck-related deaths per year. Truck accidents killed 556 people in Texas in 2017, according to the FMCSA. Florida came in first place with 320 fatalities, followed by California with 320.
Personal Injury Attorney for Victims of Big Rig Accidents in Bexar County
Big rig drivers need to realize that their actions are a significant cause of road accidents. In addition, other motorists sharing the road with truckers should be aware that extra caution is required when driving near large trucks.
While accidental mistakes like failing to use the turn signal before making a turn can result in an accident, truck driver fatigue is more likely to be the root cause. Personal injury attorneys can be helpful when the cause of the crash is a failure to make a legally recommended right turn or driving at a speed that is too high.
