Two teenage sisters were seriously injured after getting struck by a DUI driver in San Antonio on Friday morning, September 3.
The crash happened in the 10200 block of Dugas Drive in San Antonio at approximately 7:45 a.m. The two sisters were reportedly going to Stevens High School when an SUV suddenly ran over them. Both of the girls were pinned underneath the vehicle.
They were immediately taken to an area hospital with serious injuries but are now in stable condition. The woman driving the SUV remained at the scene and cooperated with the police. It was later determined that she was intoxicated at the time of the accident.
The woman was then taken into custody and was arrested for DUI-related charges. The identities of the involved parties have not been disclosed. The accident is under further investigation.
DUI Crash Statistics
The suspect was driving under the influence of drugs at the time of the accident, so the liability is clear in this case. Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol is one of the most reckless and dangerous things a driver can do. Intoxicated drivers put innocent people — and themselves — in grave danger.
While Texas and the United States as a whole have made significant progress in terms of reducing drinking and driving, there is still a long way to go. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), DUI drivers kill approximately 10,000 people each year.
According to the Texas Department of Transportation, Texas saw a total of 24,617 DUI crashes in 2019 alone, which resulted in 812 deaths. With these figures in mind, it is evident that drunk driving is not worth it. If you drink and drive, you could seriously damage or even kill someone. Even if no one is wounded in the collision and you are jailed for DUI, it can negatively affect your family and your job.
