One person was seriously hurt after getting involved in a two-vehicle collision with a distracted driver in San Antonio on early Friday morning, July 30.
The major collision occurred at the intersection of Navarro Street and East Houston Street in San Antonio at approximately 3:00 a.m. A pickup truck reportedly ran a red light at the intersection and crashed into another vehicle before striking a light pole.
A passenger in the pickup truck sustained serious injuries from the mishap. They were immediately taken to an area hospital for treatment. Authorities later determined that the pickup truck driver was distracted at the time of the accident. He was looking at his phone while driving, which caused him to run a red light.
It was also later confirmed that both of the drivers were under the influence at the time of the collision. The Toyota driver was charged with “Intoxication Assault,” while the Ford driver was charged with “Driving While Impaired.” Local authorities are further investigating the accident.
Distracted Driving Statistics
Distracted driving has quickly become one of the most serious public health risks facing road users across the United States. While texting and driving are a major cause of distraction, it is not the only risky behavior that leads to road deaths. Drivers can also be distracted by navigation programs, built-in entertainment systems, food and drink, pets, children, and many other things.
According to the National Highway Safety Association, in 2018, distraction-affected crashes accounted for 8% of fatal crashes, 15% of injury crashes, and 14% of all police-reported motor vehicle traffic crashes. Meanwhile, approximately 400,000 people were injured, and 2,841 people were killed due to distracted driving-related crashes.
A lot of things can cause drivers to be distracted. It could be children in the back seat, emotions that get the best of a driver or even driving past a disabled vehicle. Multi-tasking to the point of task-saturation while behind the wheel is a severe form of driver negligence.
