A three-year-old girl was seriously injured after a hit-and-run driver crashed into her bedroom in Sant Antonio on Wednesday night, October 6.
According to the initial reports from local authorities, the crash took place in the 600 block of Weyndale at around 11:30 p.m. Carlos D. and his three children were asleep inside their home when a car suddenly crashed into the front wall of one of their bedrooms.
A sleeping three-year-old girl occupied the bedroom the vehicle crashed into. Due to the severity of the impact, the young girl’s bed flew six feet into the air. The young girl sustained minor injuries in the crash and was taken to an area hospital for treatment. Carlos D. and his two other children were injured in the mishap.
The driver that crashed into their home attempted to escape the scene on foot but was later apprehended by authorities only a few blocks away. He was arrested and is currently facing hit-and-run and DUI-related charges. The case is currently under further investigation.
Hit-and-Run Crash Statistics
Even though the pandemic will cause fewer Americans to get behind the wheel in 2020, preliminary estimates from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show that 38,680 people will die in car accidents—the most since 2007. When compared to the 36,096 fatalities recorded in 2019, this represents a 7.2% increase.
A car accident occurs in Texas every 59 seconds. According to the Texas Department of Transportation’s most recent car accident statistics, 3,639 people were killed in Texas car accidents last year. A car accident in Texas claimed the lives of at least one person every single day last year. In 2018, a car accident in Texas claimed the life of at least one person every day.
In this case, a hit-and-run driver was involved. The number of people killed in hit-and-run accidents accounted for more than 5% of all traffic deaths in 2010. Every year, prices rise by 7.2% on average. Intoxication, driving without a license, and fear of arrest are common motives for hit-and-run drivers to flee the scene.
Intoxicated drivers put innocent people — and themselves — in grave danger. While Texas and the United States as a whole have made significant progress in terms of reducing drinking and driving, there is still a long way to go. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), DUI drivers kill approximately 10,000 people each year.
