One person was injured after a bicycle accident in College Station, Texas on Thursday morning, September 24.
The accident happened at the intersection of north Munson Avenue and Rose Circle at College Station. According to the police reports, a dump truck was parked in the northbound lane while a flagger was directing traffic in the southbound lane.
As claimed by the flagger, the person signaled for a car to proceed southbound past the dump truck and turn eastbound onto Rose Circle. Meanwhile, a bicyclist was traveling northbound in the Rose Circle crosswalk when it was struck by the car.
The bicyclist sustained minor injuries and was taken to an area hospital for treatment. The car driver received a citation for failing to yield right of way to pedestrians at a crosswalk. The accident is still under investigation by the police.
Bicycle Accident Statistics
In 2019, 843 bicyclists were killed in collisions with motor vehicles. This is a 3% decrease from the 868 bicyclists killed last year. Although bicyclist deaths have decreased by 16 percent since 1975, they have increased by 36% since 2010, when they were at their lowest point.
Bicyclists abound in Texas, particularly in major areas such as Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, and Austin, where many Texans use bicycles as their primary mode of transportation. Bicycles, unfortunately, do not offer quite the same level of safety as automobiles, and cycling accidents frequently result in serious injuries and even death. Bicycle and pedestrian deaths in Texas increased significantly in 2020, despite a decrease in the total number of crashes.
According to a Texas Department of Transportation press release, the 731 pedestrian deaths statewide in 2020 represented a 9% year-over-year increase, whereas the 82 bicycle deaths represented a 21% increase. There were 64 pedestrian fatalities and nine bicycle fatalities in the Austin area. Potholes, defective bicycle parts, and inclement weather are all factors that can lead to bicycle accidents. However, the majority of bicycle accidents are caused by either the bicyclist or another driver’s negligence.
