Fatal Motorcycle Accident Statistics
In the United States, approximately 5,014 motorcycle riders were killed in 2019. This figure represents approximately 14% of all traffic fatalities. Every day, approximately 236 motorcycle crashes occur across the country, resulting in an average of 86,000 total injuries per year (2011-2015).
Motorcycle accidents are caused by reckless driving, speeding, and alcohol use, just like any other type of accident. When a motorcycle or other passenger vehicle is speeding, distracted, aggressive, or under the influence of alcohol, an accident is more likely to occur. According to the Texas Department of Transportation, on average, one motorcycle rider dies on Texas roads every day. In 2019, 412 motorcyclists were killed in Texas, and over 1,800 people were seriously injured.
According to safety experts, collisions between motorcyclists and drivers happen when motorists make a left turn in front of an oncoming motorcycle. They most likely miscalculated the speed and distance of the bike, resulting in the collision. In 2019, most motorcycle collisions (approximately 30%) and motorcycle fatalities occurred at an intersection.
