Three people were killed while two others were injured after a street racing accident over the Trinity River on Friday night, July 30.
The deadly collision transpired at approximately 11:40 p.m. to the 300 block of West Mockingbird Lane, near where the street becomes Westmoreland Road at the Trinity River. A Range Rover and a Chevrolet Tahoe were traveling northbound at high speeds. The two vehicles then collided as they crossed the bridge.
The Tahoe reportedly struck a guardrail after the collision and was vaulted into the air before crashing into a building. Meanwhile, the Range Rover ended up crashing into two telephone poles before catching fire.
Three people inside the Tahoe were pronounced dead at the scene. Meanwhile, two people inside the Range Rover were immediately taken to an area hospital for treatment. Information about the accident is limited at the moment.
However, street racing was believed to be a factor in the accident. Local authorities are further investigating the cause of the accident.
Fatal Street Racing Accident Statistics
Street racing is still a largely unreported crime. Despite a scarcity of data, the NHTSA discovered that illegal street racing killed over 800 people in the first half of the last decade.
The state with the most fatalities was California, with 188 deaths. Texas came in second with 128 deaths. However, in the second half of the decade, fatalities from street racing accidents increased by more than 33%.
Speed limits serve a crucial purpose. There’s no arguing that speeding is unsafe. Excessive speeds can lead to fatalities in only milliseconds, possibly killing innocent motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians.
The higher a vehicle’s speed, the more force it will generate when it collides with another object. Forces generated in a collision must have somewhere to go. Passenger vehicles are designed to absorb as much energy as possible, but no system can entirely divert all forces away from passengers.
High-speed racing on the road is probably one of the most dangerous and reckless things drivers can do, especially if they’re not professional racecar drivers. They could potentially injure others, and it can also lead to fatal consequences.

You may believe that the cost of speeding is simply a ticket that must be paid—however, speeding results in a wide range of financial losses. Insurance companies must pay for property damage. This damage refers to the vehicles involved in the crash and damage to the road or highway infrastructure (such as signs or guardrails).
