A 74-year-old man identified as Martin Telesforo L. was killed in a deadly multi-vehicle collision on Spur 601 on Saturday morning, September 18.
According to the initial reports from local authorities, the crash happened on Spur 601 westbound near exit 21 at around 7:00 a.m. Lopez was driving his F-150 pickup truck along the highway when it broke down due to unclear mechanical issues. A Toyota Tundra then pulled over in front of the F-150 to help the disabled driver.
As the Toyota Tundra was tying a tow strap between his Toyota Tundra and the disabled F-150, another vehicle rear-ended the F-150. Due to the severity of the impact, the F-150 was then pushed forward and crashed into the Toyota Tundra.
Unfortunately, the F-150 driver sustained fatal injuries in the mishap. He was pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported. An active investigation of the crash is currently underway. Authorities will determine the cause and the liability in the collision.
Fatal Multi-Vehicle Crash Statistics
Every year, there are at least six million traffic accidents that occur across the country. In 2019 alone, there were around 33,244 fatal motor vehicle crashes, resulting in 36,096 deaths. Multi-vehicle accidents are only one type of car accident. When three or more cars are involved in an accident, this type of accident occurs. They are frequently caused by a “chain-reaction” crash, in which one vehicle collides with another, potentially causing it to collide with other cars on the road.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), multi-vehicle accidents account for less than 10% of all collisions in a given year, but they result in a disproportionate number of fatalities. When there are multiple defendants and many parties involved, each person can try to blame someone else. Finger-pointing can leave an injury victim without someone to pay them for their losses. The potential for these issues is why it is important to hire an experienced car accident attorney to protect your legal rights after a multiple car pile-up.
