Hit-and-Run Pedestrian Accident Statistics
The number of pedestrian deaths has risen over the past 33 years. But why? It’s mainly because pedestrians do not have the same level of protection from the dangers on the road, which puts them at greater risk of injury than passengers in a private vehicle. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the U.S. government agency in charge of traffic safety, reports that 5,900 pedestrians were killed in the United States in 2016.
A total of 447 pedestrian deaths occurred in the U.S. in 2017, and 10% took place in Texas. In 2019, pedestrian traffic deaths increased by 5 percent in Texas, with 5,975 collisions resulting in 669 fatalities. A hit-and-run driver in this situation ran over a pedestrian. Texas is eighth in the nation for hit-and-run crashes, with 8% of all accidents being hit-and-runs. According to a statement released by the American Automobile Association, Texas saw a 60% rise in the number of hit-and-run fatalities from 2009 to 2016.
