Motorcycle Accident Statistics
Motorcycle crashes are often fatal. Compared to passengers in private vehicles, motorcyclists are more likely to suffer serious injuries. According to the National Highway Road Safety Administration (NHTSA), motorcyclists are 27 times more likely to die in a collision compared to passengers of enclosed vehicles.
A motorcycle rider’s protection against the violent forces of impact during a car crash is relatively limited. In contrast to automobile passengers, motorcyclists lack seatbelt and airbag protection. Motorcycle riders don’t have a robust steel frame specifically designed to bend and collapse under pressure to protect them.
According to the Texas Department of Transportation, one motorcycle fatality occurs on Texas highways every day. In Texas in 2019, 412 motorcyclists were killed, and over 1,800 people were seriously injured. The six months from May to October are the deadliest for bikers, according to the government.
According to safety experts, collisions between motorcyclists and drivers occur when motorists make a left turn in front of an oncoming motorcycle. Motorcycle riders tend to miscalculate the distance and speed of the bike, resulting in the collision. In 2019, most motorcycle collisions (approximately 30%) and motorcycle fatalities occurred at an intersection.
