Three people were killed after a multi-vehicle traffic collision involving a semi-truck in Seguin on Thursday afternoon, August 26.
The accident happened on Interstate 10 at the State Highway 123 Bypass overpass at approximately 3:00 p.m. A semi-truck transporting meat was heading eastbound on the Highway when it swerved to avoid a Texas Department of Transportation crew working on the side of the Highway.
The semi-trucks cargo then spilled into the Highway and created a slippery road. Another semi-truck that was traveling eastbound lost control and drove through the meat, crashing into a concrete barrier before catching fire. Three other vehicles were involved in the collision. All three of them also caught fire.
The fire caused several explosions, prompting law enforcement and highway crews to close the interstate and bypass while firefighters battled the flames. Three people were killed as a result of the mishap. The identities of the deceased have not been disclosed. Local authorities are further investigating the cause of the wreck.
Fatal Multi-Vehicle Collision Statistics
A multi-vehicle accident usually starts with a two-vehicle collision. If the initial collision causes secondary collisions, resulting in a chain reaction, the overall accident is known as a multi-vehicle or chain-reaction collision. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), multi-vehicle accidents account for less than 10% of all collisions in a given year, but they result in a disproportionate number of fatalities.
In this case, two semi-trucks were involved in the collision. Texas leads the nation in the most number of fatal truck accidents in the U.S. every year. According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s (FMCSA) Large Truck and Bus Crash Facts annual report, 649 people were killed in large truck crashes in Texas in 2017. The 649 deaths were the highest total of any year since 2007.
