Fatal Pedestrian Accident Statistics
Pedestrians have made up a significant portion of traffic fatalities over the last 33 years. What is the explanation behind this? Because pedestrians are less protected from road hazards than passengers in private vehicles, they are at greater risk of harm.
More than 5,900 pedestrians were killed in 2016, according to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the government agency in charge of traffic safety in the United States. In 2017, Texas was responsible for 10% of all pedestrian deaths in the United States. There were 5,975 pedestrian traffic collisions in Texas in 2019, with 669 deaths, up 5% from the previous year.
According to law enforcement crash reports, people who fail to follow traffic safety laws and are hit while crossing the street, vehicles that fail to yield the right of way, driving distractedly, or speeding are the leading causes of pedestrian accidents. Alcohol is another common factor.
