Two people were killed, including a two-year-old child, after a fatal two-vehicle collision in Houston on early Sunday morning, August 1st.

[08-01-2021] Harris County, TX - Two People Killed Including a Young Child After a Wrong-Way Collision in HoustonThe deadly wrong-way collision transpired at approximately 3:00 a.m. on Eastex Freeway at North Loop 610 in Houston. A woman was reportedly driving southbound on the northbound lanes of the freeway for unclear reasons. She then crashed into an oncoming family car.

The wrong-way driver’s vehicle then later caught fire after the collision. The wrong-way driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Five other people, two adults, and three children were injured in the mishap. They were all rushed to an area hospital for treatment.

Unfortunately, the two-year-old child riding the family car later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. Authorities suspect that the wrong-way driver may have been intoxicated at the time of the accident.

However, it has not been confirmed. A toxicology test will be done during the autopsy. The case is currently under further investigation. The identities of the involved parties have not been disclosed.

Fatal Wrong-Way Collision Statistics

While the possibility of a wrong-way accident exists at all times, certain factors increase the likelihood of such accidents. Many head-on collisions, for example, occur in the evening hours. One reason for this is that motorists may have a harder time seeing street signs when it is dark outside. Furthermore, there are more drunk drivers on the road in the evenings.

Unfortunately, not all victims will survive a head-on collision. Because the force is greater in a head-on collision, it is also one of the deadliest types of traffic collisions. In this case, wrong-way driving is to blame for the head-on collision. Every year, approximately 355 people are killed in the United States as a result of wrong-way drivers.

With an average of 265 wrong-way collision deaths, 1.34 fatalities per wrong-way collision are calculated. These accidents are caused by various factors, including distracted driving, drunk driving, and driver fatigue.
