Three homeless people were killed in two separate crashes near Humble on Sunday night, August 22.
According to the initial reports from local authorities, the accidents transpired at approximately 10:00 p.m. on FM 1960. The first crash involves a Chrysler 300. The Chrysler 300 driver saw another motorist swerve to miss something in the road; unfortunately, the Chrysler driver could not do the same.
The Chrysler then struck two homeless men standing in the eastbound lanes. The Chrysler driver remained at the scene and was cooperative with the authorities. Intoxication was not considered a factor in the first crash,
Five minutes later, a Jeep SUV was driving around the westbound lanes to avoid the traffic caused by the initial crash. Unfortunately, a third pedestrian that was standing outside the lanes was struck by the Jeep SUV. The Jeep SUV driver failed to render aid and drove away from the scene.
All three homeless pedestrians were pronounced dead at the scene. The identity of the involved parties has not been disclosed. Local authorities are further investigating the case. Witnesses that can provide more information about the accident are urged to contact the Houston Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
Fatal Pedestrian Accident Statistics
Pedestrian accidents frequently result in serious injury or even death. This is because, unlike passengers in private automobiles and motorbike riders, pedestrians are not protected from deadly accidents.
Texas is not a friendly county for pedestrians. The vast majority of Texans travel by car. As a result, most highways are designed to accommodate automobiles rather than pedestrians. Furthermore, Texas drivers are not accustomed to sharing the road with pedestrians or watching for people crossing the street.
In 2019 alone, approximately 5,975 pedestrian accidents occurred in the Lone Star State. These accidents resulted in 669 deaths which was a 5% increase from the previous years. Another 1,317 persons were critically injured as a result of these pedestrian accidents. Common reasons why pedestrian accidents happen are speeding, drunk driving, distracted driving, and mechanical failure.
