21-year-old Michael Cao-Truong N. was killed following a car crash in Mansfield on October 15, Friday.
The crash happened around 1:22 a.m. at the intersection of Matlock Road and East Debbie Lane, injuring the female driver too who was with the victim at the time.
Nguyen was a passenger at the time of the accident and was immediately rushed to Medical City Arlington after sustaining serious injuries but was pronounced dead on Saturday at 1:00 p.m, according to a Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s office report.
Mansfield Police Department officer, Zhinonni Cook, stated that the driver of the vehicle, Joel Lagunas A. was uninjured but later arrested at the scene for intoxication assault then transported to jail.
Cook expects the charge to change from intoxication assault to intoxication manslaughter once the police department receives the toxicology report.
Nguyen was supposed to graduate this fall, according to Jeff C., the executive director of communications and media relations at the University of Texas at Arlington.
Fatal Driving While Intoxicated Statistics
Texas had the highest fatalities for alcohol-impaired driving in the country in 2016, with 1,438 people dying. Texas has significantly higher rates of alcohol-related fatalities than the rest of the country. 44% of all vehicle-related fatalities were alcohol involved or a total of 1,670. This raises a serious cause for concern as it reaches almost half of all vehicle-related accidents.
Intoxicated drivers endanger innocent people — and themselves. While Texas and the United States as a whole have made significant progress toward reducing drunk driving, there is still much more work to be done. Each year, approximately 10,000 people are killed by drunk drivers, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
Tarrant County Lawyers for Victims of Driving While Intoxicated Accidents
While your insurance company may be willing to assist you following a car accident, you should be aware that while they will provide some financial assistance, they may not always pay you what you deserve. Oftentimes, a drunk driver lacks insurance, leaving you, the victim, with no way to recover for your losses. Even if the at-fault motorist carries insurance, you may be unable to recover enough money to cover your medical bills and other expenses.
While the victim’s family awaits the outcome of the official investigation, they are encouraged to pursue a wrongful death claim with the assistance of their car accident lawyer. This allows the victim’s family to seek financial compensation for the damages caused by the fatal accident, such as funeral costs, loss of income and companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional trauma.
