Dog Bite Injury Statistics

Dog attacks claim the lives of Texans on a regular basis. Infants, toddlers, and the elderly are the most commonly killed in dog attacks, as they are the most vulnerable. Texas is frequently at the top of the list when it comes to fatal dog bites. According to a single study, dog attacks have claimed the lives of 34 people in Texas over a period of eight years. This was more than any other state had in the same time period.

Pit bulls are the most commonly involved breed in fatal dog bite incidents. Twenty-six of the study’s deaths (76%) were caused by pit bulls, followed by five deaths from Rottweilers (15 percent ). Sixty-eight percent of the victims were under the age of 12 years old. Most (52%) had not yet turned two years old. Family dogs were responsible for 53% of fatal attacks. ‘Family dogs’ Bexar and Montgomery counties had the highest number of fatalities in Texas.

Although Texas has numerous local ordinances governing dog ownership, the state’s constitution forbids local governments from enacting breed-specific regulations. Laws to prevent new fatal attacks and hold dog owners responsible have been implemented in cities like Fort Worth, San Antonio, and Garland, which have worked around the restriction. It’s illegal to own a dangerous dog in Texas, as well. In Texas, an owner must take extra precautions to keep a dangerous dog under control.
